Grandma's Specialty...

Growing up my grandma would make a checkerboard cake. It was always so special when she did. She would use vibrant colors that were always a part of the surprise. I tried to make the cake a few times the "old fashioned way", but that proved to be very, very challenging. Before leaving the States to come to Germany three years ago I found a mold while attending a Pampered Chef party. This has since made my life so much easier as I attempt the feat of making a checkerboard cake. This last week I made another cake for my Bible study. I made three layers instead of two, which is more traditional (at least in as I was brought up!)

The finished product!
It was made for St Patrick's Day so, yes, it is green!
Using the new fangled mold by Pampered Chef!Once you take the mold out the cake looks like a bulls eye Here the three layers cool off before assembling the cake.
Grandma used precision as she made the mold from wax paper. Each of the smaller circles and larger circles needed to be the same size so that they would line up correctly once assembled.
The finished product (with cream cheese icing...mmmm!)
